Our Summer Conservation Project

Marine Life Aquarium Bray is excited as the first batch of local lobster babies have left her mother in our hatchery.

We are working with local inshore fishermen who are part of the national lobster conservation programme along the Irish Sea.

How it works in a nutshell.

The fishermen bring us any female egg bearing lobsters they find and we keep them in the aquarium until they release their eggs. We keep the eggs safe in our hatchery until they are strong enough to be released back into the sea and have a higher chance of survival. They are released into suitable rocky habitats. In the wild fewer than 1% of lobster larvae survive as they get eaten by other fish.  We are strengthening their chances as they are  a little bigger and stronger when we release them.

Working with local fisherman we are helping to protect and rebuild our local lobster population for the future.
